Should drummers mix themselves?

September 14, 2012

Check out this video with Ronan Chris Murphy on drum recording.  I love his point about drummers mixing themselves.  It’s true that recording drums can be very challenging, given how many factors are in play: the actual part being played, the drummer’s playing style, type of sticks, type of drumheads, the drums themselves, the tuning of the drums, the room the drums are in, mic placement, mic choice, preamps used…you get the point.  The fact is that if the drummer knows the part well, the part is appropriate to the song, and the drummer is using the proper equipment, most of the hard work is done.  It’s when one of those factors is lacking that getting an awesome drum sound becomes incredibly difficult.  Of course, this goes for any instrument, but it’s especially true for drum kits.
